Monday, I almost half expected chocolate on my desk from one of my colleagues who have come back from a trip from where ever they have been over the weekend, I love the ones that come from France and Belgium as they have the best chocolates ever, the rest simply pick the cheapest ones from duty free (I have been a victim several times)
Today, all I have gotten is a lot of love (which I got in my other office) but not like this one, everyone is genuinely concerned about me.
So I have decided to write about the difference between my new and old office.
- My old office was very elite… meaning we had a lot of expats, who hardly ever spoke the local language. French and English is what was spoken, in my new office the local language is the main language and a bit of French(I am in a dilemma) as I can comprehend but speaking is still a challenge.
- My office had a lot of show offs, they owned blackberries, iphone, ipads, mac books, imacs HTC etc. (if you did not own one of the above it was like you don’t belong), the morning always started with the latest gadget on the market, which airline has the best fare, which country they were in over the weekend, who bought which car. I found it very pretentious(I mean we earned almost the same) I don’t own any of the above gadgets and don’t plan on purchasing any of them(except the MacBook of course), my new office is all about how the weekend was, who went to whose house over the weekend etc., no I went to Dubai blah, blah blah…….
- Majority of my workmates owned cars, I didn’t not see the need to own one as i walked to work( Besigye has nothing on me), my new work place, people hardly own cars because very few have office jobs(the reality of working in the manufacturing as opposed to service industry)
- I discovered on Friday that we (read management) have separate bathrooms from the rest of the staff, never in my history of employment have I ever encountered this. My old office had the same bathrooms for every one only difference was the women’s bathroom was much better than the guys(it made a perfect place to cry when the need arose, yes it was that bad)
- Everyone seemed to know what they are doing unlike my current work place; everyone seems to be a little confused!
- I was constantly covering my arse in my last work place as a lot of snitching happened behind closed doors. I am yet to acquaint myself with the politics of my current work place.
- Before i was in mid level management(but for some reason i was treated like a junior manger!) i am in still in mid level management (and i am treated as one).
- We had a log in system that showed what time you got in and you had to do that every time you went out(lunch break, end of day) now i just strut in any time i want(my contact doesn’t even say what time i am supposed to be in office, i simply need to work a certain amount of hours a day).
Sunday is probably my most active day, I play what my friends call a very muzungu sport and in spite trying to introduce it to them, I am yet to convert any of them to try it out (except my white friends of course) and having been out for four weeks I am so sore from playing yesterday, I think I pushed myself a little too hard.
Strange thing is I have lost weight (I cannot explain how) yet I have not been working out for the last month and a half. Must have come from all the late night dance sprees and unhealthy eating habits ( I am back to eating healthy).
Monday Blues!
